How Do Lip & Tongue-Ties Develop?

While science is yet to find a definitive answer, most research points to lip and tongue ties having a genetic component. They tend to develop during the last few weeks of pregnancy, and there are examples of them running in families.

Why is it Important to Treat My Child’s Lip or Tongue-Tie?

The most common problem caused by lip and tongue ties is feeding difficulties for infants. They can have trouble latching, creating a steady flow, and end up swallowing a lot of air. This can also translate into frustration and nipple pain for mom, leading to overly long feedings and slow weight gain.

In school-aged children and teens, ties can limit the room teeth need to come in properly, leading to gaps and crowding. A narrow upper airway can create breathing difficulties, particularly during sleep, causing a child to feel exhausted, restless, and have trouble focusing in and out of school.

How Lip & Tongue-Tie Treatment Works

Lip and tongue ties make life difficult for families, which is why we do everything we can to make the solution nice and simple.

It all starts with a consultation and exam where we’ll determine if your child has a tie. If they do, we’ll schedule them for a laser frenectomy. Compared to using surgical scissors or a scalpel like in the past, this approach is much more precise and gentler. The process takes only a few minutes, is incredibly accurate, and even infants easily remain comfortable.

Once the tie has been released, most babies are able to feed immediately afterward. You’ll return for a quick follow-up a week or so later, and we’ll give you clear aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery process.
