How We Treat Dental Emergencies

  • Initial Call: It’s always fastest to call our office if you need to schedule an appointment right away. We’ll ask for a brief description of the situation and let you know what to do next, whether that involves coming to see us right away and/or applying first aid.
  • Emergency Exam: While we’ll move fast when you arrive, we’ll make sure not to scare your child in the process. An exam and imaging will help us understand exactly what’s going on as well as present possible treatment options.
  • Immediate Care: We’ll take care of any pain your child is experiencing first, and then we’ll make any repairs to their teeth that time allows. They’ll walk out feeling much, much better than when you arrived, and we’ll schedule any follow-ups if necessary.

How Can I Prevent Dental Emergencies?

  • Daily brushing and flossing stop the small cavities that can turn into big toothaches later.
  • Wearing an athletic mouthguard can prevent a small accident on the field from turning into a trip to the dentist.
  • Discourage your child from using their teeth as tools to open packages, remove clothing tags, etc.
  • Be mindful of how often they have very hard, sticky, crunchy, or sweet foods.
  • Don’t let your child fall asleep with a bottle in their mouth unless it contains unflavored water. (Extended exposure to the sugar in formula or juice can lead to tooth decay.)
