Get to Know Dr. Karim Shallwani
The best part of my job is seeing a child who was initially scared, anxious, or even terrified of coming to the dentist eventually walk through our doors smiling and excited for their appointment. There is something incredibly rewarding about earning a child's trust and helping them realize that going to the dentist doesn't have to be a scary experience.

The Care Your Child Deserves

I find tremendous fulfillment in caring for children with special healthcare needs, sensory sensitivities, and significant dental anxiety. Every child deserves access to high-quality dental care in an environment where they feel safe, understood, and supported, and I enjoy adapting my approach to meet each child's unique needs. My goal is to always treat my patients as I would my own child.
More than anything, I love having the opportunity to practice in Dallas as a native Texan and make a lasting impact early in a child's life. A positive experience at a young age can shape how someone feels about dental care for decades to come.
How I Got Into Dentistry

As a child, I distinctly remember being afraid of going to the dentist. When I was around 10 years old, I needed two root canals on my permanent teeth, and unfortunately the experience was not a positive one. My dentist at the time did not have the bedside manner or communication style that helped me feel comfortable, and I underwent these difficult procedures without anything to help me relax.
Even at that young age, I remember thinking that I never wanted another child to have an experience like mine if I could help it.
Why I Pursued Pediatric Dentistry

Years later, while I was in college, I began shadowing dentists and quickly realized that dentistry could be practiced very differently than what I had experienced as a child. I met dentists who were compassionate, patient, and genuinely focused on helping patients feel comfortable and understood. That experience completely changed my perspective on the profession and showed me the kind of dentist I wanted to become.
When I entered dental school, everything seemed to confirm that I was on the right path. I found myself looking forward to my pediatric rotations more than any others, and I loved the energy and enthusiasm that children brought to the office. I especially enjoyed volunteering at school outreach programs and community events where I had the opportunity to educate children and families about oral health. It was during those experiences that I realized pediatric dentistry was exactly where I belonged.
My Dental Education

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of the Pacific in 2010 before attending the New York University College of Dentistry, where I received my Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 2014.
Following dental school, I completed an additional two years of specialized training in pediatric dentistry at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, graduating in 2016. During my residency, I had the honor of serving as Chief Resident, a leadership role awarded by the program to recognize clinical excellence, professionalism, and dedication to patient care.
The Importance of Choosing a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist

I am a board-certified pediatric dentist through the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Board certification requires completion of an accredited pediatric dental residency program followed by rigorous written and oral examinations that evaluate advanced knowledge, clinical judgment, and expertise in caring for children.
As a parent, one of the most important questions you can ask is whether your child is being treated by a board-certified pediatric dentist. While many dentists provide care for children, board-certified pediatric dentists complete years of additional training dedicated specifically to the oral health needs of infants, children, adolescents, and patients with special healthcare needs.
Professional Experience

In addition to my formal training, I have more than 10 years of clinical experience caring for children in a wide variety of settings and with a broad range of dental needs.
I maintain active membership in several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association, Greater Dallas Pediatric Dental Society, Texas Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the International Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Continuing Education

I regularly pursue advanced continuing education in modern restorative dentistry, including training in the latest pediatric restorative materials and techniques such as zirconia crowns and Bioflx crowns, allowing me to provide durable, esthetic, and evidence-based treatment options for my patients.
Patient safety is one of my highest priorities. I maintain certifications in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) and have extensive experience providing care using nitrous oxide, minimal sedation, moderate sedation, and hospital-based general anesthesia. I also participate in sedation-focused continuing education courses and emergency simulation training to remain prepared and up to date with the latest protocols and techniques.
Special Interests

Away from dentistry, I love exploring the world and experiencing different cultures through travel. I have been fortunate to visit more than 40 countries and enjoy learning about the people, traditions, and perspectives that make each place unique.
I also have a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors. Whether it's hiking local trails or exploring national parks and scenic destinations around the world, I enjoy spending time outside and staying active.
Community Involvement

Giving back to the community is another passion of mine. I enjoy volunteering my time and knowledge to support local underserved communities, particularly through health fairs, educational events, and outreach activities.
Ultimately, many of the things I enjoy outside of dentistry—travel, service, lifelong learning, and connecting with people from different backgrounds—are the same values that I try to bring into my practice and the way I care for my patients and their families.
